What would you do if you had just $10,000 in the bank, three young kids at home, and one chance to test your dream?
For Tanja Filipovska, the answer was simple: go all in. In this high-energy episode of SHE-talks, Lisa sits down with the founder and creative force behind MADMIA – the sock brand that exploded into a $30M global phenomenon.
From betting it all on a $7,000 Easter Show stall to building a worldwide fanbase without paid marketing, Tanja’s journey is a masterclass in grit, guts, and creating products people can’t stop talking about. This isn’t just a story of success – it’s a reminder that courage and creativity can change everything.
From Sock Designer to Category Creator
Tanja started as a fashion graduate working as a sock designer for a small startup. But when she realised socks alone wouldn’t cut it, she turned up the volume, adding shoelaces, wings, plush details, UV-reactive yarn and glitter to create something totally unique.
What started as a one-product-per-week hustle quickly became a viral sensation. And in 2019, with only $10K left to her name, she made a last-ditch bet on a stall at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. By lunchtime on day one, she’d already broken even – and by the end of the event, she knew MADMIA was destined for something bigger.
“Why not go there, take a risk and see if it’s going to work or not? I decided to take the risk and pretty much spent all my money.”
Built by Fans, Not Ads
MADMIA didn’t grow through expensive campaigns. In fact, for the first five years, Tanja spent nothing on marketing. Instead, she built a loyal community of kids and parents who genuinely loved the product… and wanted to tell the world about it.
Today, her fans are her models, her ambassadors and her voice on social media. Tanja still runs her own Instagram and TikTok accounts, responds to DMs, and hosts in-office shoots with real customers. She calls it the “MADMIA family” – and it’s this powerful community that helped her build a brand that now moves 10 pairs of socks every minute.
“The kid goes on the street and everybody who sees the sock, they’re like, “wow, this is amazing!”. And once the kid hears that, they want more of that. And that’s why they keep coming back for more socks.”
Quality That Can’t Be Copied
You can’t build a cult brand without imitators. But Tanja stays ahead with unmatched quality and strong IP protection. Each pair of MADMIA socks is made using 200-needle machines, with custom-dyed yarn and rigorous testing, often involving up to seven factories to complete just one pair.
She’s also invested heavily in design registrations and copyright protection globally, with legal teams across Asia and Europe to stop copycats in their tracks.
Global Growth Without Losing Heart
MADMIA is stocked by global giants and sells into over 40 countries. But Tanja isn’t stopping there. She’s now launching her own warehouse in Brazil to serve South America – one of the fastest-growing e-commerce regions on the planet – and working on category expansion that will see MADMIA grow into a full-scale lifestyle brand.
Despite all this, she remains deeply involved in every part of the business, from managing her marketing to working directly with suppliers. Her reason? “It’s not just a brand. It’s my fourth child.”
How Grit + Community Built a Global Brand
Tanja’s never-say-die attitude is legendary. Whether she’s posting on Instagram post-surgery or reworking a campaign that didn’t land, her obsession with creating joy through her products fuels everything she does.
She credits her growth to community, creative risk-taking, and the belief that “no” is just an invitation to try harder. Her advice? Stay at the party. Your time will come – just don’t leave too early.
“It’s a big sacrifice, that’s all I gotta say. It’s a big sacrifice. My life is, I come to work, I go home, I see my children, put them to bed and then, okay, the US is getting up, I need to be on the call. It never stops.”
